YEAR ROUND PROGRAM

St. Dominic Savio Academy believes that an integral component of a comprehensive program for children with autism includes a consistent, year-round school program.  SDSA is proud to offer a full-time, year round program that meets the Arizona Department of Education’s requirements.  We have:

  • At least 180 days of school per year
  • Monday-Friday
  • 6 hours per day

TRADITIONAL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

A key component of the SDSA program is grouping students in settings that reflect a traditional classroom, while supporting students with ABA-trained instructional assistants, special educators, and related services.  It is our goal that all of our students will develop classroom skills that they can use in any academic setting.  By teaching our students how to function in a classroom, we give them the skills they need for future academic success.

CLASSROOM STRUCTURE

SDSA currently has two classrooms, each with one lead special education teacher, and multiple ABA-trained and experienced instructional assistants. The classrooms will maintain an organized and structured setting to promote the highest level of learning for each student. Students will complete all of their academic groups in the same classroom. The academic material for each student is presented in large group, small group, and 1:1 instruction, depending on the type of skill and its level of acquisition.  The variations in teaching format will promote generalization and maintenance of skills taught.

HIGHLY SKILLED STAFF

The staff members at SDSA are a key component to what makes our program truly unique. All classroom staff receive daily coaching by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). In addition, the instructional staff at SDSA attend yearly conferences, trainings and workshops to further our education in the field of applied behavior analysis. We believe that a good teacher never stops learning!

SMALL CLASS SIZES

SDSA is dedicated to maintaining a small school environment with a family feel. Our commitment is to our students, and to ensuring an organized and calm environment for them. Since our inception in 2009, we have committed ourselves to never sacrificing the quality of our program in the name of growth.

A COMPREHENSIVE ABA-BASED PROGRAM

St. Dominic Savio Academy’s curriculum is taught utilizing the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), with full-time program direction by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Students are exposed to daily instruction in all academic areas including math, reading and writing. They receive instruction daily in social and play skills, vocational skills, and daily living and self help skills. In addition, all students have the opportunity to participate in music therapy, P.E., and art instruction weekly.

ASPIRE: WORK/ STUDY PROGRAM

ASPIRE is a work/study program created by SDSA and tailored to the unique needs of our students. It is designed to help prepare the students for transition out of high school and, ultimately, employment in the community.  All students from 6th-12th grade will participate in ASPIRE.

All students in ASPIRE develop a portfolio of independent living and work skills that they will utilize in most any setting-home, workplace, and community. It is our goal that students leave SDSA after high school prepared to lead the most independent adult life possible.

Students learn skills in a 1:1 teaching format, and, as new levels of independence are reached, support is gradually lifted so that students are working independently. Most importantly, students maintain these critical skills and learn to demonstrate them in all pertinent settings.
